It’s not easy for an athlete to compete again after giving birth, but Ana not only did it, but also decided to devote more time to her mental health. “After all, since my mother abandoned me as soon as I was born, she left me in the hospital, I am very afraid that the people I love will disappear,” he told the aforementioned media.
But this was not the only issue he raised during the interview. Peleteiro explained the comments she had to live with as a black, athletic, adopted woman. “When I get attacked, they tell me: ‘You black bitch, go to your country.’ It makes me angry because I was born in Galicia on December 2, 1995,” he explains to the publication. Although she is very happy with her adoptive family and has endless gratitude towards them, Peleteiro also stated that the child needs a surrogate mother. Ana explained that her mother “gave birth at home when she was 18” and left her in hospital after the birth. “What I know is that she was a very brave woman who knew how to recognize that she was not ready to raise me and that, therefore, she needed someone who would raise me for her,” the athlete confessed.
After this, the administration tried to find him a family. The first family rejected her because of her skin color, but the second decided to take care of her. Ana Peleteiro’s adoptive parents tried to have children for four years, but Ana finally came into their lives. “I don’t mind talking about this topic because I’m proud of it,” she said, very happy that she was able to spend her childhood with a family that raised and supported her.
In terms of sports, Ana Peleteiro is having a very good moment right now. This weekend, the athlete will compete at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Glasgow, the city where she became European champion in the triple jump in 2019. The Galician arrived at the competition more than prepared: two weeks ago she jumped 14.32 meters in Ourense, reaching the minimum for this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris and the World Championships itself.
