Super Mario Bros. Movie Ties Detective Conan As Japan’s Highest-Grossing Movie of 2023 #anime | Anime, manga and videogame news

a film by Super Mario Bros. has accumulated a total of 13.53 billion yen (about US$94.9 million) in Japan. It is now tied with Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine (Iron Submarine), the 26th film in the Detective Conan franchise, as the highest-grossing film of 2023 in the country so far. Although other anime films such as The First Slam Dunk and Suzume have higher box office totals, they are not released in 2023.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine are both currently the 13th highest-grossing animated films (including anime) and 20th highest-grossing films in Japan. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is also the highest-grossing Universal Pictures film in Japan.

The Super Mario Bros. movie surpassed Disney’s Frozen 2, which grossed 13.37 billion yen (about US$94.0 million), to become the second highest-grossing foreign animated film in Japan. The first Frozen film is ahead of The Super Mario Bros. Movie with box office earnings of 25.5 billion yen (about $179.2 million).

The Super Mario Bros. movie was released in Japan on April 28 and sold 1.276 million tickets and earned 1.843 million yen (about $13.54 million) in the first three days.

The film was released in the United States and in over 60 markets worldwide on April 5. The film now has a worldwide gross of $1,350,540,590.

The film has been the highest grossing film of 2023 worldwide. It is also the highest grossing video game adaptation in history.

Disney’s 2019 CG film The Lion King is the third highest-grossing animated film worldwide if the film is considered animated, or second if it is not. It is the fifteenth highest grossing film of all time.

NBCUniversal’s Peacock service began airing the film on August 3.

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelnick directed the film from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. The film’s English voice cast includes Chris Pratt and Charlie Day as Mario and Luigi, respectively. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Princess Peach. Jack Black voices Bowser.

Other cast members include Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Keegan-Michael Key as Todd, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kemek, and Sebastian Maniscalo as Spike. Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario and several other Nintendo characters in the games, also lent his voice for a “surprise cameo” in the film.
