Sustainability and technology: the future of logistics in Spain

Rafael Aguilera Muñoz, CEO of the Logistics and Transport Business Organization (UNO)

In an interview with Movant Connection, Rafael explains that logistics in Spain faces three major challenges and points to the urgency of public action to overcome them.

Logistics In Spain and around the world it has become very fashionable in recent years. Previously, most of the population knew little about this sector, associating it only with trucks or military themes. However, after the pandemic and growth of e-commerceWe have all realized the impact of logistics on our daily lives.

People now understand how a port closure or a problem at sea can directly affect the consumer. This Raising global awareness of logistics was clearly reflected in Spain.

In addition, logistics is in the spotlight due to issues related to sustainabilityThe supply chain relies on transport and this results in emissions that are currently being monitored.

Spain faces difficulties that can be summarized in three great trials. First of all, environmental sustainabilityMuch attention is paid to reducing emissions of pollutants.

Secondly, there is shortage of qualified personnelparticularly heavy truck drivers, although other profiles such as traffic controllers, warehouse managers and customer service representatives are also needed.

The third problem is related to the emergence new technologies. Companies that are not at the forefront of digitalization and technology are doomed to disappear. It is imperative for companies to cope with the current uncertainty and adopt new technologies to gain a competitive advantage.

In addition, in Spain a fourth task could be added: jump on the railroad, which has not yet received the necessary development. This transition could become solution of the first two problems mentioned.

“We are facing a very important issue at both European and global level: deglobalisation,” says Raphael (EFE/EPA/Khaled Elfiki).

The situation between Russia and Ukraine has forced companies in Europe to get used to uncertainty. Budgets for the next 3 or 5 years are no longer reliably managed.

On the other hand, we are currently facing a very important problem, both at European and global level: deglobalizationWe come from an increasingly globalized, connected world, and through a series of events we realized that we had to change our over-dependence, particularly on China.

Yes there is trade war between the US and Chinaand Europe is at the center of this process. This means bring production that was previously done in China closer to other countries, which affects logistics.

Although we have good prospects, we face a number of problems that we do not share with other countries and that need to be addressed. However, public administration is trying to address them, especially with regard to sustainabilitySince companies cannot make the transition alone, they need support not only from a regulatory perspective but also to facilitate the process.

In terms of taxation, we are one of the most punished in the European Union, which is a burden for companies that want to settle here. However, with the help of the state, many foreign companies are currently settling in the country, and we hope that this trend will continue in this direction.

This item very promising and many companies, both foreign and domestic, admit that logistics is synonymous with competitiveness. So I think it is a sector that will continue to thrivebut it needs a little more recognition and support from public administrations.
