The office of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad announced Tuesday news that has shocked the country and caused a major international stir: The first lady, Asma al-Assad, is suffering from leukemia.
As stated in the statement published by the aforementioned institute, “after presenting numerous symptoms and undergoing a wide range of tests and medical examinations,” the woman has received a clear diagnosis: she has acute myeloid leukemia.
As expected, the woman will withdraw from public life for some time and cancel all her planned professional commitments, as she will begin strict treatment to take maximum care of herself and prevent any type of infection or illness.
This news has fallen like a bucket of cold water on those around the Syrian politician’s wife, because, a few years ago, in 2019, she was diagnosed with very serious breast cancer, which caused her to put her life on hold for a few months . Although she eventually underwent intervention and managed to recover successfully, it was a very complicated experience for both her and her family.
It should be noted that, unlike other First Ladies, Asma has always played a very active role in the politics of her country and has become a ‘reference’ for many citizens. However, a large part of the Syrian community has strongly criticized the British-born woman for her role in the civil war that has ravaged the country since 2011.
The conflict in the Asian country arose as a result of peaceful protests against the Assad government in March 2011. The country’s high command did not welcome these demonstrations and responded with harsh repression. The rebellion that arose led to an open civil war that continues to this day and has already claimed the lives of about half a million people.
Major media outlets around the world have picked up the news of the Syrian president’s wife’s illness, which has given rise to various comments on the topic on social networks.
Asthma Waters suffers from myeloid leukemia, the most common type of leukemia in adults. It is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. If left untreated, the disease can rapidly and dramatically deteriorate a person, which is why the woman will be focusing on her recovery process.
