The 5.9 magnitude quake shook much of Guatemala and reportedly damaged the facade of a church in Suchitepéquez.

An earthquake of 5.9 degrees was noticeable in areas of Guatemala on Friday, January 26, 2024, Civil Protection officials detailed, with no reports of major damage or victims so far.

According to the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh), the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the region of Escuintla, but due to its intensity it was felt throughout almost all of Guatemala.

Initially the intensity of the earthquake was said to be 6 degrees, but later it was updated to 5.9 degrees.

Incivumeh reported that the epicenter of the earthquake, recorded at 11:52 pm on January 26, was located in Escuintla, almost on the border with Santa Rosa, at a depth of 38.5 km.

Officials indicated that the earthquake was noticeable in at least 12 departments of Guatemala.

The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conrad) reported rocks falling from the facade of an old church in San Pablo Jocopillas, Suchitepequez, known as La Portada.

La Conrad also said that there are reports of road collapse due to the earthquake.

Landslides are reported in the sector called Pachites, at the exit of San Juan Municipality and at the exit of San Pedro la Laguna, Sololá.

One of these landslides killed three people riding a motorcycle.

So far, three people have been reported injured, including a minor.
