The Baldwin case and other tragic accidents that left people dead on recording sets

(CNN) — Hollywood is the land of fiction, but the specter of real deaths can hang over movie and TV sets.

The death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, after actor Alec Baldwin discharged a firearm on the set of the film “Rust” in New Mexico in October 2021 is just one of the Tragedies that occurred during filming.

There are multiple cases of crew members and stuntmen being killed on film, including a stuntwoman who died while performing on the set of “Deadpool 2” in 2017.

Cast members have also died from accidents on set.

These are other accidents that occurred on the recording set

Brandon Lee

While filming the movie “The Raven” in 1993, actor Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, was killed when he was struck by a bullet from a gun that was supposed to have only blanks.

Actor Michael Massee, who played drug dealer Funboy in the film, shot Lee during a scene with a gun later found to be improperly loaded.

The dummy bullets had been replaced with cardboard padding, but a bullet fragment broke off and remained in the gun.

That metal tip of the dummy bullet hit Lee’s abdomen. He was 28 years old.

Brandon Lee’s family issued a statement following Hutchins’ death on the set of “Rust.”

“Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and everyone involved in the ‘Rust’ incident,” they said. No one should ever be killed with a firearm on a film set. Period.”

John Eric Hexum

Prop pistols can be deadly if fired at very close range.

In 1984, actor John-Eric Hexum was allegedly playing with a gun on the set of “Cover Up: Golden Opportunity” and died after putting the gun to his head and pulling the trigger.

The blank pushed a piece of his skull into his brain and he was taken off a life support system a week later.

Jon-Erik Hexum rose to fame in 1982 after landing the lead role of Phineas Bogg on the NBC series “Voyagers!”.

Victor Morrow had built a long career as an actor and director when he starred in “Twilight Zone: The Movie” in 1982.

Morrow played a racist who goes back in time and faces situations where he is persecuted.

In a scene directed by John Landis, the actor and two child actors, Myca Dinh Le, 7, and Renee Shin-Yi Chen, 6, film a scene in which they flee a Vietnamese village during the Vietnam War while a stunt helicopter loomed over them.

The helicopter crashed after a pyrotechnic explosion, landing on Morrow, 53, and the children, who also died.

Landis, the pilot and three others were charged with manslaughter. All were acquitted after a high-profile trial that lasted nearly nine months.
