The Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory will open to the public on Wednesdays…

The Astronomical Observatory of Cabezo de la Jara will offer visits this summer, the Tourism Councillor of Puerto Lumbreras announced. Tony Navarro.

Navarro explained that “in Puerto Lumbreras we are fortunate to have the remarkable Cabezo de la Jara Astronomical Observatory, a unique space located in an unparalleled and pristine natural area that allows us to observe the stars without light pollution, making the study of astronomy possible.”

“Members of the Murcia Region Astronomy Team are responsible for conducting tours of the observatory, lasting about 2 hours, during which visitors have the opportunity to make different observations depending on the lunar phases,” he explained.

The Mayor of Culture specified that “the meeting begins with an introductory talk about the concepts of astronomy and science, explaining what the objects that will later be observed are like. The tours include a lesson about the sky with a simple explanatory presentation, ending with the observation of the most important celestial objects through a telescope located in the dome of the Astronomical Observatory.”

Visits will take place every Wednesday and Saturday.at 22:00, until next September 15th. In addition, the number of groups is limited, so it is necessary to make a reservation at the tourist office by calling “652 902 268” or sending an email to “oficinadeturismo@puertolumbreras.es”. The price per person is 2.5 euros, children under 10 years old enter free.

The council member recalled that the observatory, located in the natural area of ​​Cabezo de la Jara, 7 kilometers from Puerto Lumbreras and approximately 800 meters above sea level, has an automated dome with a diameter of 310 centimeters, equipped with a MEADE telescope with an aperture of 355 millimeters and a focal length of 3556 millimeters.

And the Cabezo de la Jara astronomical observatory is considered one of the largest and least light-polluting in the Murcia region. Finally, Navarro wanted to “invite the residents and visitors of Lumbreras to enjoy this activity and learn about the interesting world of constellations at the Cabezo de la Jara astronomical observatory.”
