Genaro García Luna and Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán have been related for years. However, the trial carried out in the United States against the former Calderonista official has confirmed the rumors of his ties to the Sinaloa Cartel.
During the trial against García Luna, witnesses, including drug traffickers such as ‘El Grande’, assured that the former official received millionaire bribes to favor the illegal activities of the Sinaloa Cartel, while leading the war against drug trafficking in Mexico.
For this reason, it is not surprising that the former Secretary of Security during the six-year term of Felipe Calderón has reached an agreement with ‘El Chapo’ to free one of his sons: Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, who now presumably leads the criminal organization ‘Los Chapitos’.
In 2005, Iván Archivaldo was arrested in Jalisco for a traffic violation after partying, in addition to the fact that the son of the Mexican drug lord was already Wanted by US authorities accused of drug trafficking for being a member of the Sinaloa Cartel.
At that time, “Chapito” was admitted to the Social Rehabilitation Center Number 1 “El Altiplano”, in the State of Mexico, where his brother Ovidio Guzmán is now.
After his capture, his father and Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada met with Genaro García Luna to negotiate his release, who would have received millions of dollars in exchange.
Despite their resistance at first, the former official accepted and in the end he guaranteed the drug lords that Iván Archivaldo Guzmán would not be extradited to the United States.
According to journalist J. Jesús Lemus, who wrote these facts in his book ‘El Licenciado’, the release of Iván Archivaldo would have cost the Sinaloa Cartel some 5 million dollars.
Who is Iván Archivaldo Guzmán?
Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, known as ‘El Chapito’, is one of the four children that ‘El Chapo’ had with Alejandrina Salazar.
He grew up in Guadalajara, in a safe environment that allowed him and his three siblings greater access to education compared to their father, as well as dabbling in the business world.
Alejandro Hope, a security analyst, told the BBC that Ivan Archivaldo Guzman he does not have the cunning of his father; However, he grew up “in the midst of lessons in brutality that made them form within that world”, and together with his brothers he learned loyalty from an early age.
In 2005 he was arrested in Zapopan, Jalisco, for laundering money for the Sinaloa Cartel and was released three years later for lack of evidence.
The magistrate Jesús Guadalupe Luna Altamirano was suspended after the son of “Chapo” was released, this due to bank movements of almost 3 million pesos.
In those years, the official dismissed the accusations against Iván Archivaldo Guzmán.
At the end of 2021, the United States government offered 5 million dollars for information related to ‘el Chapito’.
