According to publisher Nexon, the finale went “below expectations”.
The free-to-play action shooter developed by Embark Studios has had a strong start since its release last December with a formula that combines destruction and 5v5 combat and has proven to be quite popular among the gaming community.
A second season with a hacker setting began earlier this year, but according to Nexus, it was neither a success nor the expected user growth.
“The launch of Season 2 in March resulted in a short-term boost in player performance but delivered lower-than-expected retention and revenue rates.” Now, as the company explained, Embark is working with the Nexon Live Operations team in Korea to “understand and correct key issues.”
The results of The Finals impacted Nexon’s first quarter 2024 financial results. Although revenue in Europe and North America rose to 9.9 billion yen (thanks to Dave the Diver and The Finals), overall revenue was below expectations.
The company, which has seen good results from other games in its catalog such as EA Sports FC Online, EA Sports FC Mobile or Blue Archive, admits that the results are “offset” by The Finals’ “below expected” performance.
Meanwhile, the game is gearing up for a third season that will premiere next month, which Nexon hopes will be better received by players.
