The iconic Las Vegas Mirage is closing after 34 years.

(CNN) — The Mirage Hotel-Casino on the Las Vegas Strip and its signature volcano will soon close after more than three decades in business.

The 3,000-room resort will cease operations on July 17 as it undergoes a three-year renovation that will erase all traces of the Mirage and its tropical theme.

Opened in 1989 by casino magnate Steve Wynn, the Mirage ushered in the era of luxury resorts on the Strip and was the first resort to have a sidewalk volcano attraction leading to Bellagio and Venice Park, emulating the Mirage with its dancing. fountains and canals respectively.

“We look forward to an exciting journey into a new era where hard rock Las Vegas will illuminate the Strip with world-class entertainment, innovation and hospitality,” the Mirage Hotel said on its Facebook account, which was flooded with memories in the comments.

Besides the volcano, the Mirage was also home to other typical Las Vegas events such as the Siegfried and Roy White Tiger Show and a Cirque du Soleil show featuring music by the Beatles.

The resort will reopen in 2027 as Hard Rock Las Vegas, with a towering 700-foot (213-meter) guitar-shaped hotel tower similar to its Florida property, and the volcano will be demolished to make way for new bedrooms.

MGM Resorts bought the Mirage from Wynn in 2000 and sold it in 2022 for more than $1 billion to Hard Rock International. This will be the second time Hard Rock has a presence in Las Vegas, as the brand previously owned the current Virgin Hotel on the Strip.

Starting in July, more than 3,000 Mirage employees will be laid off. Hard Rock said it would pay more than $80 million in compensation. The culinary union, which represents about half of the Mirage’s employees, said in a statement that affected workers will receive $2,000 for each year of service, with the option to return when the hotel reopens.

Mirage guests with reservations made after July 14th will have their reservation canceled and refunded. As for casino chips, they must also be used before at the Mirage, but they can be exchanged at the neighboring Treasure Island for another 120 days after the resort closes.
