On February 22, Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C lander, called Odyssey, completed a seven-day journey into lunar orbit and soft-landed near the Malapert A crater near the Moon’s South Pole at 23:00:24 GMT. On February 24, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft flew over the landing site at an altitude of approximately 90 km. and photographed Odysseus.

Odysseus stopped at 80.13 degrees south latitude, 1.44 degrees east longitude and an altitude of 2579 meters inside a ruined crater one kilometer in diameter, where the local terrain has a slope of 12 degrees.

Odyssey marks the first successful soft landing under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Service (CLPS) initiative, as well as the first time in more than 50 years that NASA’s new science instruments and technology demonstrations have operated on the Moon.
