“The military is progressive, it includes women”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must be admitted immediately 3,000 ultra-Orthodox studentsbecause the Israeli Attorney General ordered it. And this is just the beginning after the historic sentence Supreme Court ends military exemption for ultra-Orthodox.This has caused tensions within Netanyahu’s government, whose partners are staunchly opposed to imposing a ‘military’ on the Haredis.

Up in arms – symbolically, explicitly or not so much – the Israeli ultra-Orthodox community has received the news that its young Haredis will have to perform ‘military’ duties, which until now have been compulsory for all Israelis except them. In a letter to the army’s legal adviser, the office of prosecutor Baharav-Miara has pointed out that the authorities must act immediately to enforce the verdict of justice.

it is estimated that some 63,000 ultra-Orthodox youth (Haredim) of military age who will be obliged to serve in the army following the new justice order, although the Israeli armed forces have already warned that by the year 2024 They could recruit only 3,000,

Rabbi Mordechai Bloy called the decision “outrageous.” “It’s an insult to the military Very progressive for our men, they even included women in it…” she pointed out angrily. This is because ultra-Orthodox Jews have special requirements in areas such as diet or Living with WomenAnd the Army will have to accommodate new recruits in specialised battalions.

The Conservatives have threatened to unravel the current coalition government – two ultra-conservative parties are promoting it. Unless Netanyahu falls from popularity in a short time.It is up to the Prime Minister, his executive, to implement the landmark Supreme Court judgment that struck down the exemption.

And although he tries to manipulate the law so as not to offend the Haredis, such as not recruiting them until the age of 35 or only recruiting those who do not dedicate themselves to the study of Torah, he is having a hard time. According to the attorney general, he will now have to start calling these fifth parties. “We will not join the army under any circumstances”, they warn.

The issue represents a divide within Israel’s own Jewish majority, which mostly sees Discriminatory Haredi exception. The army needs reinforcements and could be joined by up to 66,000 ultra-Orthodox. In the long term, this could mean that compulsory Israeli military service – currently lasting about three years – would be reduced by seven months and there would not be as much need for reserves.
