The Perseids can be seen from La Cocosa Farm on August 14.
The Provincial Council of Badajoz, through the Ecological Transition Zone, has organized a session of astronomical observations at the Finca La Cocosa Sky Promotion and Protection Center (CPPC) on the occasion of the meteor shower that will take place on August 14 next year, caused by the Perseids. The event will consist of observations of stars with the naked eye and other astronomical phenomena through telescopes.
The Perseids, also known as the Tears of St. Lawrence, are one of the most spectacular and anticipated meteor showers of each year. This astronomical phenomenon occurs every summer and usually peaks in mid-August. It occurs when the Earth passes through the debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, causing dust and ice particles to enter our atmosphere. These particles disintegrate at high speed and produce bright flashes in the night sky, offering a spectacular display of shooting stars visible in both hemispheres. The Perseids owe their name to the constellation Perseus, from which they appear to emanate, and their popular nickname, “Tears of St. Lawrence,” refers to their proximity to the feast day of St. Lawrence on August 10.

The number of places is limited and participants will be provided with a free bus from the city to get to the place where the observation will take place, as it is not accessible by any other means of transport. The meeting point and departure of the bus will be the Centro Vivo Hospital at 22:30.
The aim of the CPPC is to raise awareness among citizens about the problems caused by light pollution and to promote the preservation of the night sky of Extremadura as a driver of development for our municipalities. Through these actions, the Ecological Transition Zone of the Provincial Council of Badajoz continues to work on the development of the strategy “Extremadura, good night”, the aim of which is to highlight the starry night sky of Extremadura, offering this differential resource to everyone and inviting them to know and enjoy it.
