That is why it is not surprising that artists are often the inspiration for designers and that they maintain friendships that transcend the merely commercial.
A great example of this is the relationship between the American singer and actress Britney Spears and the Italian designer Donatella Versace. Recently, the sister of the late Gianni Versace spoke with Emily Ratajowski on her podcast ‘High Low with EmRata’ and they touched on, among other topics, the closeness that the creator maintains with the interpreter of ‘Oops… I did it again’.
Donatella recalled the moment in which she met the singer and the impact she had on her from that first moment. “She came to Milan, she was about 20 or 21 years old … she was at the height of her career, but she was very humble (…) It was incredible,” said the designer. “Since we met, Britney has always had a very special place in my heart,” the Italian confessed.
That affection was the engine that prompted Donatella to get involved in making Britney’s wedding dress in 2022, when she married Sam Asghari in an intimate ceremony attended by the couple’s closest friends in Los Angeles. She was “very small, but very beautiful,” Versace guaranteed. Figures like Madonna, Paris Hilton, Drew Barrymore and Selena Gomez were also part of the guest list.
When Britney asked Donatella to create and make her dress, she couldn’t say no. “Designing Britney and Sam’s wedding gowns came naturally to me. An enormous amount of love was poured into every detail. Together with our Atelier, we created a dress and tuxedo that exude elegance and glamour. They look perfect together! “, declared the designer a few months ago in the framework of the wedding.
For Donatella it was very important to be able to accompany her friend at this crucial moment in her life. “Seeing her free, happy and now getting married puts a smile on my face,” said the designer. According to the creative mind of the Versace house, “it was amazing to see Britney, so liberated, so free.”
Being a part of this moment in Spears’ life meant a great job for Donatella and her team. As reviewed in People magazine at the time, the singer’s bridal gown took a total of 700 hours of craftsmanship to be completed at Atelier Versace.
The wedding gown featured a sweeping 10-foot train, a sultry thigh-high slit, a vertical neckline, and a string of pearl buttons down the back. The artist completed her bridal look with a long silk tulle veil, white satin shoes, a choker, transparent gloves and diamonds by Stephanie Gottlieb.
Not surprisingly, when Britney shared some images of the wedding, she made reference to her designer friend in the text. “Thank you Donatella Versace for designing my dress…I felt so beautiful. I think we all fell on the dance floor at least 2 times. But I mean come on…we were all voguing,” Brit clarified. One of the great lessons that Spears has learned in her life -already at 41 years old- is that love is paid for with love.
