The #50 Ferrari and #8 Toyota had been battling with Alessandro Pier Guidi and Brendon Hartley respectively for the previous hour when they decided to stop on the same lap. The Toyota had a slow pit stop with a pistol that prevented the nut from being removed to change the wheel, meaning that after driving close to each other they left within 10 seconds of each other.
This helped the #51 Ferrari, which had previously been battling the #7 Toyota for the podium, to get very close to the #8, even to the point of overtaking. Hartley managed to regain second place, but as he reached the chicane he saw the Ferrari brake and overtake him, forcing him to spin.
Hartley barely managed to escape the gravel run but lost valuable time, causing him to fall from second to sixth, ruining the chances of Ryo Hirakawa and Sebastian Buemi, who left the image of the day.
Toyota’s biggest asset was the No. 7 car, which followed and passed the No. 51, although the No. 50 had already built up a lead of almost half a minute. However, a new stroke of luck would change everything when the No. 50 Ferrari’s door was broken, resulting in an additional stop that forced Jay’s No. 7 ToyotaOse Maria “Pechito” Lopez (with Argentine at the helm), Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries are in the lead with just over an hour and a half left.
