Few novels have been brought to the big screen as often as The Three Musketeers of alexander dumas. The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan It is, by European standards, a blockbuster, with a million-dollar budget, privileged locations, thousands of extras and 650 horses. As for the cast, all the leading figures of French cinema (and some from other countries) have joined the film. The fact that they have been allowed to film in historical locations such as the Louvre or Versailles speaks of the importance of it.
It is true that The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan is based fairly loosely on the novel by dumas, and certain passages have been completely rewritten. In this version we have terrorist attacks, attempted assassination, and some characters are bisexual. However, despite the liberties that have been taken in the details of the story, an extraordinary fidelity has been sought in the reconstruction of the locations, costumes, uses and customs. Swordsmen get tired and dirty in fights, horses have to be changed at the posts, and it’s so cold in the churches that the monks give off steam when they sing. By the way, the musketeers, although they are skilled swordsmen, carry muskets, and do work that we can compare with that of modern bodyguards, typical of what they were, the King’s personal guard.
Agile and intelligent, with a stellar cast
The three musketeers D’Artagnan It has an intelligent script and an agile direction, and nothing is long, with its more than two hours of footage. The staging of the fights is original, and reflects the confusion that the combatants must experience between the disorder, the stabbing and the shots. It’s dirty, devious fighting instead of the chivalrous fencing contests we’ve seen in other versions. In a certain passage, the overhead shots provide scenes of remarkable spectacularity. In summary, a very modern camera language has been combined with a search for verisimilitude that makes the action impressive and close.
As already mentioned, the cast is of the first order. Francois Civil he is a young d’Artagnan, somewhat clumsy, who climbs the steps two at a time, a provincial who tries not to show himself. vincent castel He is an Athos of a certain age (which makes his story and his melancholy more credible), tired, but always elegant. Pio Marmaï embodies a plump, jovial and deadly Porthos. Romain Duris he is an ardently believing and adamant Aramis, covered in makeup, but fearsome in combat. The royal couple is also notable, with a vicky krieps like a dignified queen, devoured by passion and fear under the icy appearance and louis garrell like a Louis XIII who wants to avoid war, which everyone else at Court seems to want. Eric Ruff, Richelieu, although he has a small role in this film, departs remarkably from previous installments, where he was Machiavellian, hieratic and almost unreal. In The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnanthe cardinal has a very human and trustworthy aspect, which is probably going to be used in the next chapter.
The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan is a great production that delivers a modern version of the classic. An agile staging, an excellent setting and a stellar cast make it a highly recommended viewing.
