Carlos Alcaraz is ready to return to the Roland Garros court. After his fast debut on Sunday – he lost just four games to lucky underdog JJ Wolf – the Spaniard will have another opponent from the previous stage: Dutchman Jesper De Jong, who just surprised Britain’s Jack Draper in five sets.

Alcaraz will be aiming for his twentieth win in a year that has seen him struggle to reach his top level. Especially with injuries such as an ankle injury caused by a fall on the Rio circuit that forced him to retire against Thiago Monteiro, and a right forearm injury that forced him to miss Monte Carlo and Rome.

But in Paris his fitness looks positive. There’s a reason he cruised to victory in one hour and 51 minutes to seal his 70th ATP Tour win on clay. If he continues to compete at Roland Garros, he will earn his tenth consecutive victory in the second round of a Grand Slam tournament (record 10-2 here and 3-0 here); and I would quote him in the third round with the winner of this Wednesday’s fight between Sebastian Korda and Sunwoo Kwon.

Another Latin American heading into the third round this Wednesday will be the leader in the number of wins (20) on clay this season: Sebastian Baez. The Argentine, ranked twentieth in the tournament, will face Austrian Sebastian Ofner for the first time, against whom he will seek his first qualification into the third round of Roland Garros (and third place at a Grand Slam after achieving this year in Australia and at a Grand Slam). US Open 2023).

In addition, Spaniard Pedro Martinez will try to surprise sixth seeded Andrey Rublev, with whom he has a 0-1 record. The player ranked 48th in the PIF ATP Rankings will be seeking her fourth qualification to the third round of a major and first since Wimbledon 2021; as well as his second victory over players from the Top 10 after the first, achieved a few days ago in Estoril (Ruud).

In other important matches of the day, Italian runner-up Jannik Sinner will take on local Richard Gasquet, who made his debut at the tournament in 2002, before the Italian was born. Sinner leads the Lexus ATP HeadToHead tournament 2-0 and if he remains undefeated, he will face the winner of this Wednesday’s clash between Pavel Kotov and Stan Wawrinka, the tournament’s 2015 champion, in the third round.
