The turnover of the video game sector in Spain grew by 16.3 percent in 2023, amounting to 2.339 million euros, compared to the 12.09 percent observed in the previous year, when it reached 2.012 million euros.

These figures make the country the third market in the European Union, as highlighted by the Spanish Video Game Association (AEVI). The only markets ahead of them are Germany and France.
This growth is due to increased sales both in physical format (24.85%) and online (10.25%), the former with a turnover of 1,038 million euros and the latter with a turnover of 1,301 million euros, as stated in the AEVI Yearbook “The video game industry in Spain in 2023”, published this Wednesday.
In physical sales, the greater importance stands out for “hardware”, with a turnover of 460 million euros, while in digital sales, “online platforms” stands out with 716 million euros.
In all of these sales, the top sellers are video games for consoles, with 6,434,356 units registered. They are followed by accessories (3,153,821) and game consoles themselves (1,108,880).
Action, adventure and sports are becoming the most popular genres, with the most purchased games being: EA SPORTS FC 24, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Hogwarts Legacy, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Fifa 23, which are best sellers.
“2023 was a year of significant growth in the turnover of the video games industry, strengthening its leading position as a culture, entertainment and technology industry,” commented AEVI CEO José Maria Darc.
20 MILLION PLAYERS
The number of players in Spain grew in 2023 to over 20 million (20.05 million), a notable increase from 18.2 million in 2022 and 18.1 million in 2021. By gender, men still make up the majority (51%) compared to women. (49%), although the situation is equal.
Spanish gamers prefer to play on a smartphone (32%), mainly with the Android operating system (30%), and consoles (31%), with a laptop as the last option (8%), and a tablet (13%). And they devote an average of 7.7 hours a week to it, which is higher than the average in France (7.4 hours) and Italy (6.5 hours), but lower than the UK (10.8 hours) and Germany (10.4 hours).
