“There is a fascist movement in Europe that is very powerful”
Spanish Olympic medalist Ana Peleteiro spoke in front of RTVE cameras this Wednesday and warned of the rise and strengthening of the political power of fascism in Europe, and also questioned the racist abuse of athletes both in stadiums and on social networks.
When asked about racist abuse in sports, the Galician athlete spoke out strongly for its eradication. “I think there should be a law that punishes this kind of abuse more radically,” he said. After that, she added that “there is a fascist current that is gaining great strength” and said that athletes who have a “speaker”, among which she put herself or the French footballer Kylian Mbappe as an example, say “So that people know, what is happening there”.
Peleteiro, who admitted that he does not have time to “react to positive messages,” assured that these negative comments on social networks do not concern him. “But I think I have a very important speaker,” the athlete recalls, adding that she has to “voice” issues that “even though they don’t affect me, they affect other people.” He also claims that this is what his teammates told him.
Regarding insults and racist behavior, which have especially increased in sports such as football in recent years, Ana Peleteiro claims that she has always spoken out in favor of Spain and the Spanish people and believes that there is no racism. “Well, they put a stitch in my mouth and said, well look, there is,” and he defended that “there are many” both on the national Olympic team and outside of it who “live with racist comments in their daily lives.” ”
The triple jumper hoped that talking about it would help prevent something like this from happening in the future, or that at least “people would think once or twice if they could actually make that comment,” and she did. . compared to changes in gender-based violence: “there is now a law that supports abused women, and those abusers go to prison.”
Additionally, Peleteiro explains that he has personally experienced racism on his social media, which he calls “very sad,” and says he has never received these types of comments.
“But those people who have this ideology or this mentality, they were angry that there were five black people and not one. So like oh-oh, there are already a lot of them. So it gets angry. It seems like a threat and it boggles my mind, I mean it seems incredible to me,” says Peleteiro, adding, “More than anything, because it has been observed that intermarriage is one of the the best things that humanity has. ”
