They announce the date when you can see the northern lights again in Spain: it will be very soon

“See the Northern Lights”. This is one of the wishes that we all wrote down on our “to do before we die” list and that many Spaniards were lucky enough to witness on May 10th. The phenomenon went around the whole world and left the most spectacular pictures that left everyone in amazement. If you missed it, all is not lost and this They predicted a new date where this natural phenomenon could be repeated.

The previous one, in May, was caused by a strong geomagnetic storm (accompanied by at least five solar storms), which made the northern lights visible at much lower geomagnetic latitudes than usual, as occurs in Galicia. These storms, which occurred simultaneously, were caused by a sunspot known as “AR3664”. But why is this important?

The sun rotates on its axis once every 27 days, and this sunspot, which had been on the opposite side of the sun for several weeks, returned to the southeastern edge in late May, and last week the Solar Orbite spacecraft spotted a large solar flare. May. If this remains active, new northern lights could be seen. when the above-mentioned 27 days are completed, during which the Earth’s rotation lasts on average. And this will happen in the same June. And very soon.

Date when you can see the new northern lights

Next June 6th will be 27 days old, so on that day or in the days immediately before or after this, this phenomenon may happen again.. It should be noted that there is no 100% certainty that this will happen or that it is possible. The northern lights were clearly visible in May as the aforementioned solar storms occurred a few days after the new moon, making them easier to see in unusual places.

What are the Northern Lights?

They were named by astronomer Galileo Galilei in 1619 in honor of the Roman goddess of dawn, as he thought (wrongly) that they responded to the reflection of sunlight in the atmosphere. The Northern Lights actually result from “the interaction of gases in Earth’s atmosphere with the solar wind: a stream of electrically charged particles called ions that fly away from the Sun in all directions,” as the National Study explains. Geographical”.

This specialized medium goes on to explain that “when the solar wind reaches the Earth, it collides with the planet’s magnetic field, creating streams of charged particles that flow toward the poles. Some ions enter a layer of the atmosphere called the ionosphere, where they collide with gas atoms and “excite” them with additional energy. This energy is released in the form of light particles or photons.”
