They are attempting a coup in the Democratic Republic of Congo

(CNN) — An attempted coup in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was suppressed by defense and security forces, army spokesman General Sylvain Ekenge announced this Sunday in a televised speech published by government spokesman Patrick Muyaya on X.

Both foreigners and Congolese took part in the attack and have since been “taken out of action”, Ekenge said.

He said defense and security forces had the situation under control and urged people to go about their work “freely and peacefully”.

Michel Moto Muhima – a spokesman for politician Vital Kamare, whose house was attacked early Sunday – said two police officers and an attacker were killed.

“The residence of Honorable Vital Kamare was attacked by a group of armed men dressed in military uniform at about 4:30 in the morning. Two police officers assigned to guard him lost their lives as well as one of the attackers.” Muhima announced.

Muhima said Kamre and his family were not injured and their security had been increased.

The country’s state-run Radio-Télévision Nationale Congolaise (RTNC) also reported an attack on Kamerre’s home. According to RTNC, the attackers moved towards Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday morning.

The RTNC also quoted General Ekenz as saying that “defense and security forces have killed all the attackers.”

Deputy Prime Minister Peter Kazadi said the incident occurred during the night from Saturday to Sunday in the Gombe commune in the country’s capital, Kinshasa.

“We want to assure the national and international community that our defense and security forces have immediately restored public order that was disturbed by armed men,” Kazadi declared in X.
