Cuba announced it was extending the deadline for approving vehicles built in parts and pieces, known as “recimbilis.” The Ministry of Transport (MITRANS) informed that this practice started in September 2021 through Resolution 200.The MININT-MITRANS National Commission announced that the approval process was scheduled to end on December 31, 2023.

However, “it extends to the legalization and distribution of all vehicle license plates processed by the provinces.”

Even the provincial authorities themselves understood that from January 1, the driver of an armed vehicle would be banned from traveling on the island’s roads.

However, MITRANS updated its provision and allowed the extension and, in turn, amended the said Resolution 200.

In March 2022, it was revealed that Cuba would add more than 100,000 vehicles assembled from parts and pieces to the vehicle fleet circulating in the country.

At that time, Reynaldo Becerra Acosta, Secretary of the National Road Safety Commission, presented a statement on the subject.

“This will impact traffic circulation and road safety, increase congestion and increase the vulnerability of these modes.”

MITRANS rules allow each owner to approve only one vehicle. They can be made motorized, trailered and semi-trailered after being approved by a team of experts.
