They mourn the death of Dr. Capriles, a prominent professor and pediatrician in Puerto Rico

Unfortunate news for the medical community and the Puerto Rican population. Dr. José Capriles, member of the RCM of Puerto Rico, passed away.

On the morning of this January 3, 2023, unfortunately we have to announce the death of Dr. José A. Capriles Quirós, pediatrician, specialist in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, researcher, academic, professor, expert in accreditation issues, among many others, who would assume the position as Dean of the School of Medicine of the Medical Sciences Campus of Puerto Rico from June 23, 2021 to date.

From the Journal of Medicine and Public Health (MSP), we regret the death of Dr Caprilesan honored member of health in Puerto Rico. The news was released through the social networks of the Medical Sciences Campus, with a heartfelt message from the institution’s interim Rector, Professor Carlos Ortíz: “We stand in solidarity with your loved ones, family, friends, colleagues and students” says the statement.

Ortíz’s statement adds: “Dr. Capriles will be remembered and his memory will be honored as that of a pillar of the Medical Sciences Campus and of the University of Puerto Rico; your commitment, contribution, love and defense towards our institution will never be forgotten; will always be grateful, ”he emphasizes.

Commitment to Medicine in Puerto Rico

the deceased Dr Caprileswould have served in various positions at the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Ricomost recently: Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Director of the Office of Accreditation and Licensing, and Chairman of the Self-Study Steering Committee for Middle States on Higher Education (MSCHE) accreditation.

Likewise, he taught Ethics and Humanities classes in the Doctoral Program in Chiropractic at the UCC.

In an exclusive interview for MSP, the doctor assured that: “My role at the Universidad Central del Caribe will be to sustain accreditation with the corresponding agencies to guarantee excellent quality and promote a culture of decision-making based on evidence and results.”

From that moment of his arrival in office, he faced different challenges such as the “leak” crisis, in which the migration of nearly 14,000 Puerto Rican doctors to other countries has been evidenced. He also addressed the accreditations crisis and always stood out for his commitment to the health of the Puerto Rican people.

On June 23, 2021, it was announced that the Dr Capriles Quirós, would assume the challenge as Dean of the School of Medicine of the RCMAt that time, Dr. Waleska Crespo, president of the Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC), made the announcement of the appointment of the Dr Capriles Quirós in office.

“The Dr Capriles He has an extensive and robust academic and professional career that will contribute to the strengthening of our School of Medicine, as well as the development of new projects for the benefit of students and faculty. The knowledge and experience that the Dr Caprilesas well as the discipline with which he carries out his duties and his passion for academic teaching, mark a new stage in our institution, which gives him a warm welcome”, Crespo assured.

The Dr Capriles He was a professional with an impeccable resume, a specialist in Pediatrics and a subspecialty in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine; as well as a master’s degree in Health Services Administration; Master’s Degree in Public Health with a specialty in Maternal and Child Health; certificate in Developmental Disabilities and Early Intervention; post-doctoral degree in Leadership in Public Health and graduate certificates in Gerontology and Bioethics.

This knowledge and his commitment to medicine in Puerto Ricoallowed him to become visible for his human quality and unconditional dedication, both with patients and with the new professionals who fired him today.

Recalling the statements of that June 23, Capriles assured at the press conference that his expectations were focused on the quality of medical education: “My commitment is to train health professionals with optimal knowledge, empathy and sensitivity to assist in the care of people who need health care in all its dimensions. In addition, maintain academic rigor with a look towards innovation and evidence-based practices. Likewise, promoting the assessment to facilitate the decision-making process, based on results and on the priorities that emanate from the university community”, he said at that time.

This was evidenced until the end of his days, and the place where the doctor’s funeral will be held will soon be announced. This news causes disappointment in the medical community, and both the directors and the information team of the Journal of Medicine and Public Health express our solidarity with the family, colleagues, and friends of the Dr Capriles.
