NEW YORK (AP) — Thirty Seconds to Mars is back with a new set of songs born of the pandemic and compiled under a very long title. “It’s the end of the world, but it’s a beautiful day” It’s exactly what it sounds like: optimistic despite the devastation.
“I really feel like it reflects where we are as a planet, as people,” says Jared Leto, who formed the band with his brother Shannon. “You keep waiting for the madness to end. But now only one more day is left. And sometimes it’s easy to forget that life is full of promise, hope, and beauty.
Despite its long title, the band’s sixth studio album is filled with shorter songs than usual and a sound that attempts to stray from their typical anthemic, soaring sound.
“We are not ashamed of anything” Leto says. “But this album was different. We really challenge ourselves to do as little as possible. We wanted to focus on the sound and really allow you to feel and hear what’s there.”
The resulting 11-track album is packed with hooks, with the lead single “Stuck”, a dancehall hit Lady Gaga would be proud of, charting in the top 10 of Billboard’s Rock & Alternative Airplay and Alternative Airplay charts.
“This is an important album for us. “It feels like we’re a new band, like we’re back to the beginning and it’s an exciting place to be on your sixth album.” Leto says.
“We’re really breaking new ground creatively and going places we haven’t gone before. And I think a lot of people will be surprised.”
The musical has given Oscar and Golden Globe winner Leto something to focus on as the actors’ strike, which shut down film and television shootings, drags on.
“I’m really grateful to have another outlet to share my creativity and I get to share it with my brother. And that’s a really important thing to me.” Leto says. “I’ve been forced to do both.”
He and Shannon started working on it at the beginning of the pandemic. Jared was in Nevada and California during the lockdown and his brother was in Seattle. “There was a little distance between my brother and I, which is always good when working on an album.”Jared jokes.
“Once we finished all the shows available to stream in all languages (I think maybe it was around the “Tiger King” era, I’m not sure), we used that time to our advantage. Decided and started working. A new album.”
The duo collected a few hundred songs and narrowed them down to the final 11, starting with Mashal’s anguished song. “Never Love You” up to encouraging Get up child.
“Of course, they started out with dark, melancholy songs about isolation and despair. But as we start to move out of that time, the songs also reflect feelings like hope and optimism.
He got help on some songs from writers and producers Monsters & Strangers. “Never Not Love You” And lost these daysEd Sheeran and Johnny McDaid of Snow Patrol “The world is burning” and Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons “Life is beautiful.”
“Other artists teach you things. “They bring out different sides of you,” Leto says. “If I had known what the rewards were, what the benefits were and how fun and exciting it could be, I would have started much earlier.”
Leto is one of those rare artists who has found success in both film and music (with two albums in the Top Ten of the Billboard 200) and hasn’t been told to stay on his path. This summer, Thirty Seconds to Mars played Lollapalooza with The 1975 and Kendrick Lamar.
“I think we’ve all become a little more forgiving of people taking different paths, exploring different paths.”They say. “Maybe it’s a throwback to a time in the past where, you know, musicians were dancers and dancers sang and singers acted.” And adds: “Everything comes from the same place.”
Leto has also loosened his control over the band and its music a bit. He says it was important for him to be in control and take responsibility from the beginning.
“But as I’ve grown up, I’ve learned to let go of some of them and share some of them, to collaborate more and be open to other ideas and inspiration.” They say.
“What a privilege it is to make the sixth album. is incredible. I never thought we’d make just one album. I never thought we would have any of our songs on the radio. “I never thought that a single person would sing our songs at a concert.”
