This is a WhatsApp scam that can steal your bank details without you even noticing it: here’s how it works.
When Meta announced that it was going to implement screen sharing feature WhatsApp has already warned about the possible consequences this could entail. In a world where computer fraud is commonplace, it was only a matter of time before thieves adopted new theft tactics. Since the end of 2023, various incidents involving this characteristic have occurred and been reported, but the latest method is even more dangerous and fast. Criminals are looking for vulnerable targets for their scams: with the click of a button, they can obtain bank details and all the information contained on the phone.
How does WhatsApp video calling scam happen?
It all starts with a video call from an unknown number – the first warning sign. If the user receives an incoming call, the scammers inform the victim that there is some technical problem with the camera and ask them to click the “Share Screen” button. Once criminals can see the contents of the other phone’s panel, send SMS and display security code. From this point on, thieves can take control of the WhatsApp account and transfer it to another phone, so that the defrauded person no longer has access to their own account.
The criminals have left all chat messages, including any sensitive information they may contain.. The goal is to obtain bank account details or other important data such as an ID card. As with all things, prevention is essential, so the best defense is to reject any suspicious call. The problem is that many of the people caught in their networks lack sufficient technological knowledge, so they are more vulnerable to this kind of action.
