Tsitsipas failed to break ATP 500 curse at Barcelona Open
In that Conde de Godot Tournament in Barcelona, Casper Ruud (6th place) won with a score of 7-5 and 6-3 Stefanos Tsitsipas (7th place) and managed to win his first title at a tournament outside the ATP 250. For the Greek, this defeat meant the continuation of an unsuccessful streak in tournaments of this category on the circuit.
Although he became champion at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 a week ago, the truth is that at the Conde de Godó he wanted to end the curse: become ATP 500 champion.
During his career, the Athenian won 250 ATP tournaments, a Masters 1000 and even an ATP Final. However, despite the fact that he had 11 finalsstill failed to lift the trophy in the 500 event.
Barcelona is one of the places where the worst records are recorded when it comes to finals. With this from Casper Ruud, he already has four decisive cases in which he cannot succeed. The other three? In 2018 and 2021 against Rafael Nadal and in 2023 against Carlos Alcaraz.
The last person to make at least four finals without a title in the Conde de Godó was David Ferrer. The Spaniard reached this stage in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012 and finished with the same result in all of them: defeat by Nadal.
Another background worth mentioning is the history Guillermo Vilas. The Argentine managed to reach the finals between 1980 and 1983 and in none of them did he manage to win the trophy (two defeats to Ivan Lendl and two earlier Mats Wilander).
Tsitsipas already has a total of 11 finals in ATP 500 tournaments. In addition to the four mentioned in Barcelona, he achieved the mentioned case in: Dubai (2019 and 2020), Beijing (2019), Hamburg (2020), Acapulco (2021), Rotterdam (2022) and Astana (2022).
