The Professional Medical Union of Asturias (SIMPA) requested a meeting of the Health Council of the Medical District VI (Eastern Asturias) to inform the population about the tuberculosis outbreak reported in Llanes. “In this matter, information is crucial,” said SIMPA Secretary General José Antonio Vidal.

The petition was supported by the Association of Healthcare Consumers of the Principality of Asturias (Asencro), which also demands the presence of public health officials in Llanes so that they can inform citizens, and especially the families of Penha Tu students. school where several cases have been reported.

SIMPA has already conveyed its request to Site VI Manager Fernando Manceño, who is expected to convene a meeting in the next few hours. Meanwhile, Ministry of Health officials will meet today in Arriondas with representatives of the Llanes City Council and the school community of the Peña Tu School to “update information and coordinate actions regarding the cases of tuberculosis identified in the council.” SIMPA evaluates this meeting as “very positive”.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed four cases of tuberculosis, three of them in minor children and one adult, who are being monitored and treated to prevent the spread of the bacteria that causes infections (Koch’s bacillus).

In addition, nine more infected people were identified, but they did not develop the disease and are not infectious (with tuberculosis, as with other infectious diseases, infection does not mean the development of the disease).

The ministry ensures that it carries out “continuous monitoring” of patients and their family environment.
