Ukraine and Russia exchange 180 prisoners of war – DW – 06/25/2024
This Tuesday (06/25/2024), Ukraine and Russia, with the help of the United Arab Emirates, exchanged a total of 180 prisoners of war, 90 from each side, both the Ukrainian Presidency and the Russian Defense Ministry reported today.
“Home is not just a word. Home is Ukraine. Today, another 90 of our people have returned home from Russian captivity,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on his Telegram channel.
In the case of Ukraine, soldiers of the National Guard, navy, army and border guards, as well as defenders of the city of Mariupol and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant returned home. Also returned were soldiers who fought on the fronts of Kherson (south), Kharkiv (northeast), Zaporizhia (southeast) and Donetsk and Lugansk (east).
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on its Telegram channel that the exchange was the result of a negotiation process in which the UAE provided humanitarian mediation. “The released servicemen will be transferred to Moscow on military transport aircraft of the Russian Air Force for treatment and rehabilitation in medical institutions of the Russian Defense Ministry. All those released are receiving the necessary medical and psychological assistance,” the ministry said.
