UNAB Kinesiology Academic received important recognition at the II Chilean Congress of Lifestyle Medicine – Radio Festival
The purpose of the study conducted Kinesiology teacher UNAB, Viña del Mar headquarters, Paulina Ibacachereceiving second place in the best research paper presented at the II Chilean Congress of Lifestyle Medicine.
The work presented was developed jointly with researchers from the University of Almeria (Spain) and an academic from the University of Chile.
About the investigation
The work covers one of the fundamental pillars of lifestyle medicine—physical activity. This shows very important results because although severely obese people awaiting bariatric surgery averaged the minimum moderate physical activity recommended by the World Health Organization (150 minutes per week), they also spent an average of twelve hours per day sedentary lifestyle, which is independently associated with a higher risk of morbidity and mortality. It is important to consider that scientific evidence has previously shown that people who spend more than 4 hours a day in a sedentary lifestyle need more than 60 minutes of physical activity per day to reduce their risk.
According to the scientist, the strong association between daily steps and moderate physical activity, objectively assessed using triaxial accelerometry, a device that records the acceleration generated by movement in 3 axes, suggests the utility of assessing physical activity in these users using more affordable devices. for the population that count the number of steps taken, for example, pedometers, applications on phones or watches with acceleration sensors.
