Venezuela election 2024 results, live | Biden and Lula will talk about the crisis in Venezuela this Tuesday

Brazil’s PT backs Maduro’s re-election, awaits announcement of Lula government

Brazil’s Workers’ Party (PT), the force led by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, described Sunday’s elections in Venezuela as “democratic and sovereign” and acknowledged Nicolas Maduro as “re-elected”. The Lula government has not yet recognised the election result.

“The PT salutes the Venezuelan people for the electoral process that took place on Sunday, a peaceful, democratic and sovereign day,” the party’s national executive said. Regarding allegations of fraud, he assured that the National Electoral Council, “which declared the victory of President Nicolás Maduro,” would act on all the resources received within the time frame and under the conditions provided by the Venezuelan Constitution. He anticipated that Maduro, “now re-elected,” should begin dialogue with the opposition to address Venezuela’s serious problems, which he attributed to the “illegal sanctions” imposed on the country.

“The PT will remain vigilant to contribute, to the extent of its strength, so that the problems of Latin America and the Caribbean can be addressed by the peoples of the region without any form of violence or external interference,” the note concluded.

So far, Lula’s government has limited itself to celebrating the “peaceful nature” of the elections and said it would wait for the publication of all electoral results to make a statement.

In a statement released on Monday, the government assured that “the principle of popular sovereignty must be followed through the impartial verification of the results” and added that Brazil “awaits the publication of all the data from the polling stations” in that context.
