Vitamin that slows the progression of diabetes: These are the recommended doses per day, we also get it from the following foods | Health | Magazine

To the “surprise” of some endocrinologists, the vitamin has been recognized for its contribution to slowing the progression of diabetes. Information that is no doubt intended to help people at risk of contracting this disease.

This vitamin is D, the so-called sunshine vitamin, which is found in some foods and supplements.

Recent American Endocrine Society Guidelines outline which groups of people should take vitamin D to know if they need supplements and in what doses.

There is no need to measure vitamin D levels in the general population unless they have a condition such as low calcium levels, osteoporosis, or another condition related to calcium metabolism.

Francisco Rosero, endocrinologist

Vitamin D and diabetes

One of the four groups of people who need vitamin D supplementation are prediabetics, who have high fasting blood glucose levels, below 126 but more than 100. Or post-exercise blood glucose levels above 140 but less than 200, Rosero details. .

Vitamin D supplements in this group – people with prediabetes – help prevent diabetes progression by 15%, a guideline cited by a doctor on his social media suggests.

Vitamin D dosages recommended for groups of people

  • Children (covers those under 18 years of age): 600 units per day.
  • Pregnant women: 600 units per day.
  • Adults over 75 years of age: 800 units per day.
  • Prediabetes: 800 units per day.

Specifically, Rosero recommends pregnant women, septuagenarians, and people with prediabetes take 1,000 units per day.

The normal value of vitamin D is no longer 30, but 20 nanograms per milliliter of blood.

  • There are cereals and brands of orange juice, yogurts, margarines and other products with added vitamin D.

Rosero states, “If we are under 50 and have low vitamin D levels, it is best to tan rather than take supplements.”

The dangers of vitamin D overdose: What is hypercalcemia and how does it affect the body?

How do you tan? “With 15 to 20 minutes of sun exposure without sunscreen, face and forearms from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is sufficient for the synthesis of vitamin D.” (HEY)
