US House of Representatives to vote next week on aid package for Israel
The US House of Representatives will vote next week on a $17.6 billion aid package to Israel that is not related to planned aid to Ukraine, the House Speaker, Republican Mike Johnson, has announced.
Johnson has stated that the measure is necessary to quickly help Israel in the war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, noting that this is not the time to consider a package that would combine border security provisions between the US and Mexico with Ukraine. and links aid to Israel. It is expected that after long negotiations the Senate will soon make this proposal public.
The Israel bill announced today is the latest sign that House Republicans are willing to indefinitely delay approval of aid to Ukraine in response to bipartisan disputes over U.S. immigration policy. Aid to Israel is far more popular among House Republicans than aid to Ukraine. Their control of the House guarantees that the aid package will receive the necessary majority.
