War between Israel and Gaza, live | Hamas, Fatah and other Palestinian factions agree on “government of national unity” in China | International

According to Israeli media, the Israeli military leadership believes it can leave Gaza for six months

According to Israeli media, the Israeli military and security leadership believes that the armed forces could completely leave the strip for six months as part of a possible agreement for the release of the hostages, without the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas taking advantage of that time. The Minister of Defense, Yoav Galant, and the Chief of the General Staff, Herzi Halevi, as well as the directors of the domestic and foreign intelligence agencies (Shin Bet and Mossad), Ronen Bar and David Barnea, both briefed the Prime Minister last night, Benjamin Netanyahu, who supports a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, according to public broadcaster Kan.

According to their analysis, the Palestinian group will not have enough time to regroup and arm itself in six months, so the priority now is to free the Israeli hostages remaining in the enclave, whose time is limited. According to the Israeli news channel 12, Netanyahu was reluctant to accept the version of the four officials, whom he criticized for their flexibility. Netanyahu traveled to Washington this Monday for an official visit, in which he will meet with US President Joe Biden and deliver a speech before both houses of Congress.

Last night, as thousands of Israelis surrounded Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport demanding that he not travel before a ceasefire agreement was sealed, Netanyahu announced that an Israeli delegation would resume talks with Hamas. The last indirect talks between Israel and Hamas took place a few weeks ago in Doha and Cairo, with positive signs that a settlement was close, but at the last minute the prime minister added demands that blocked the talks again, such as control of the Philadelphia corridor – the Strip’s border with Egypt – and the Rafah crossing. In his talks with the Israeli military and security establishment, Netanyahu made it clear that he does not intend to back down from his demands, which is why they will be part of the message of the negotiating delegation, which is due to leave on Thursday. The location of the talks has not yet been announced. (EFE)
