Israel intensifies its offensive in central and southern Gaza
The Israeli army reported intense fighting against Hamas militiamen in central Gaza this Saturday and “selected operations” in Rafah (south), where according to Palestinian sources two civilians were killed today after at least 25 people were killed yesterday in two attacks against shops housing displaced people.
In central Gaza, Israeli soldiers and fighter jets killed militants and destroyed Hamas infrastructure such as rocket launch sites, according to a military statement. For their part, Palestinian sources report artillery strikes against houses in the Nuseirat refugee camp, injuring several civilians, including children.
In Rafah, where the army claimed to have killed alleged militants in bombardment and hand-to-hand fighting, the Palestinian Wafa agency reported the deaths of two civilians in a drone strike north of the city, in addition to the demolition of homes.
In Khan Younis, Wafa says, the army fired on western areas of the city, particularly the Al Mawasi area, causing injuries amid the displacement of dozens of families towards central areas.
In the same area yesterday, at least 25 Palestinians were killed and 50 injured in two Israeli attacks on tents housing displaced people, according to the local health ministry, which is dependent on Hamas, an incident that has also been condemned by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
“The ICRC office, surrounded by hundreds of displaced civilians living in tents, was damaged by close-range shelling in Gaza. The dangerous shelling so close to humanitarian structures puts the lives of civilians and humanitarian workers at risk,” the Committee said in a statement last night, condemning the killing of 22 Palestinians.
Following a preliminary investigation, the Israeli military said it had no evidence of gunfire at al-Mawasi and claimed to be investigating the incident.
In the northern city of Gaza, Palestinian sources condemned the firing today by Israeli tanks deployed in the Netzarim axis against the neighborhoods of Zeitun, Tal al-Hawa, Sheikh Ejlin and al-Sabra, leaving several people injured, including children and women. (EFE)
