Warning about the “Mercadona scam”: the company explains how not to fall for the scam

In the digital age, cyber fraud is becoming increasingly common in Spain, affecting both citizens and companies. Cybercriminals are constantly looking for new ways to deceive their victims, and their latest target is supermarket chain Mercadona.

“Congratulations, we have just received your order”

A recent cyber scam uses the name of a Valencian company to send fake emails and SMS messages notifying users of non-existent orders. “Congratulations, we’ve just received your order,” the scam message begins, followed by a request for click on the link to complete payment for the proposed order

. These emails contain a false order number and text riddled with spelling errors, which already raises suspicions among the most attentive recipients.

Social network user X was one of the first to discover the scam and decided to contact Mercadona through this platform. The chain quickly confirmed it was a scam and released a statement clarifying that its official emails only come from addresses ending in “@mercadona.es”, “@mercadona.com” or “@mail.mercadona.com”. Any other sender, the company warns, is an attempt at fraud.

Exercise extreme caution

These types of scams, known as “phishing”, are aimed at steal sensitive information such as bank details or passwords to access victims’ accounts.

Although the Guardia Civil had already warned about this scam in March through a video on TikTok, the method has gone viral again, affecting new users.

Authorities advise extreme caution to avoid falling for these scams. Preventative measures include: Protect personal information, use strong passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and avoid public networks.as they may be vulnerable to these types of attacks.

Mercadona has reiterated its commitment to the security of its customers and encourages them not to provide personal or banking information in response to suspicious messages. “It’s important to be on your guard and not fall for these scams.”the company concludes.
