Waterway completes post-production

After an odyssey of nearly 6 years, the final stage of production for Avatar: The Way of the Water is officially done and dusted off, and the sequel is now well and truly ready to splash into theaters around the world. Ace Producer Jon Landau, who also produced the original 2009 film today announced via social media that all the t’s have now been crossed and the i’s are dotted on the film’s post-production which began in 2020 shortly after the end of filming.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Landau posted a photo of himself and the film’s massive post-production team proudly expressing his well-deserved sense of accomplishment with big smiles and swollen fists. Director, james cameron is seen holding a giant bottle of champagne in what was clearly a big celebratory moment for everyone involved. “Congratulations to the entire Avatar: Way of the Water family,” Landau captioned the photo. “Yesterday we finished our final mix and image mastering and I took this photo of our post-finishing team. I am grateful to each of you for your contributions to the film.”

Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Cabinet of Curiosities) a close friend of Cameron also praised the team for a job well done. In a reply to Landau’s tweetDel Toro hailed the sequel as “a stunning achievement” that is “full of majestic vistas and emotion on an epic, epic scale. A master at the height of his powers.”

When Avatar released about 13 years ago, it broke new ground in Hollywood for its innovative use of technology, especially 3D, providing audiences with a truly immersive and breathtaking experience. Cameron’s masterful presentation of the idyllic exoplanetary moon Pandora received unanimous acclaim, earning him three Oscars, including Best Cinematography. The first film certainly raised the bar for sequels and with a much bigger production budget and a lot more time invested in making the sequel, expectation levels are high for what The way of the water will offer.

Several trailers and behind-the-scenes clips have teased an experience worth having, and we’re all looking forward to fully diving into Pandora’s waters when the film hits theaters on December 16th. The way of the water will pick up the story 10 years after the events of Avatar, and will explore family dynamics in the midst of an impending war that once again threatens their existence. Jack Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) have now become parents and must tap into their parental instincts as they struggle to preserve their pedigree and ultimately defeat the unyielding enemy.

The way of the water will see the return of familiar faces, including Stephane Lang, Sigourney Weaver, CCH book, Dileep Rao among others. The film will introduce us to a new tribe, the inhabitants of the reefs of the Metkayina, which further expands the cast to include even more star names, including Kate Winslet, michelle yeo, Jemaine Clement, I am Chaplin, Wine Diesel, and more. The movie has a mammoth task ahead if it is to match the box office success of its predecessor, however, it’s all going in the right direction for Cameron and his team. On the one hand, the film marked the coveted release in China, and on the other hand, a Fandango survey reveals that it is at the top of the list of films expected by Generation Z.

Tickets for the sequel have started to sell out. The Way of Water will be released in North America and China on December 16. Check out Landau’s Instagram post below.
