Webb Telescope Detects Supernova and Confirms Hubble Voltage

The Webb Space Telescope collected data on gravitational lensing of supernovae. This information was confirmed thanks to previous measurements of the Hubble constant, that is, a constant indicating the rate of expansion of the Universe.

The NASA Telescope X account reports that scientists are using the Webb telescope to measure the expansion of the Universe by pointing it at a gravitational lensing supernova, SN H0pe. The light from this exploding star was deflected and magnified by the cluster of galaxies between it and us, the report said, written in English.

This telescope discovered three points of light towards a distant, densely populated galaxy cluster. Brenda Fry of the University of Arizona, along with a team of researchers from institutions around the world, has been leading this effort since the telescope’s discovery.

“Points of light not visible in Hubble images of the same cluster taken in 2015 were evident when the images arrived on Earth. Field G165 was chosen for this program because of its high star formation rate. more than 300 solar masses per yearan attribute that correlates with higher supernova rates,” Fry explained.

Origin of supernova

Initial analysis confirmed that these points correspond to an exploding star with unusual properties. First of all, it is a type Ia supernova, which It was created by the explosion of a white dwarf star.. This type of supernova is usually called a “standard candela”, meaning that the supernova had a known internal brightness.

“The effect of gravitational lensing is important for this experiment. A lens made up of a cluster of galaxies lying between the supernova and us refracts the supernova’s light into multiple images. This is similar to how a triple vanity mirror shows three different images of the person sitting in front of it. “Webb’s image demonstrated this before our eyes because the middle image was inverted relative to the other two images—a ‘lensing’ effect predicted by theory,” Fry said. explained.

The telescope photographed the explosion

To get three images, light traveled three different ways. Because each path had a different length and the light traveled at the same speed, the supernova was photographed at three different moments during the explosion Webb telescope. Compared to the mirror triptych analogy, there was a time delay during which the mirror on the right showed a person picking up a comb, the mirror on the left showed combing hair, and the mirror in the middle showed a person putting a comb down. crest.

According to the researcher, Tryptic supernova images are special: Time delays, distance to the supernova, and gravitational lensing properties determine the value of the Hubble constant, or H0 (pronounced H-zero). The supernova is called SN H0pe because it gives astronomers hope to better understand the changing rate of expansion of the Universe.

Combining these observations with other observations from other telescopes on Earth confirmed that SN H0pe is tied to the background galaxy.well behind the cluster that existed 3.5 billion years after the Big Bang.

Seven subgroups provided lens models which describe the two-dimensional distribution of matter in a galaxy cluster. Because a Type Ia supernova is a standard candela, each lens model was “evaluated” for its ability to predict the time delays and brightness of the supernova relative to the actual measured values.

To avoid bias, the results were hidden from these independent groups and revealed to each other at the announced “live disclosure” day and time. The team reports that the value of the Hubble constant is 75.4 kilometers. per second per megaparsec plus 8.1 or minus 5.5. (One parsec is equivalent to a distance of 3.26 light years.) This is only the second time the Hubble constant has been measured by this method, and the first time a standard candle has been used.
