Days later I sent it to him, ”he said.

“What did I tell him? García Luna’s involvement in drug trafficking and other things. The important issue is drug trafficking. He was aware. That same day, after that, he and I talking alone, standing next to his desk –I mean Mr. Calderón–, there I told him that his strategy was wrong and why it was wrong”, he added.

The general was retired months later, in 2008, because of his age. However, an investigation was started against him, so in May of 2012 was stopped, months after the Calderón government ended. He was accused of having ties to the Beltran Leyva cartelfor which he was confined in the Almoloya de Juárez Prison, State of Mexico.

It was 11 months later, on April 17, 2013, that he was released from prison, after a judge ordered the suspension of the process due to lack of evidence against him, but the damage had already been done.

“My uncle made the call, he said who this García Luna was. And well, he paid for the consequences with 11 months in prison in Almoloya and obviously devastated the whole family”, recounted Humberto Gual.

“I know very well everything that happened. I know that they invented protected witnesses for him, that he had contact with the Beltrán Leyva family. My uncle does not have any assets, he is a person who has always lived from the institution, from his work as a soldier. They invented that he received money, ”he added.
