Why is digital fiber slower at night?
Digi has become one of the most popular operators in our country, attracting a large number of clients from other companies. Causes? Among other things, good customer service and excellent pricing on fiber plans, with a particular focus on smart fiber. But is it possible that users experience slower speeds at the end of the day?
The emergence of Digi in Spanish telecommunications market This was great news for a lot of users. The company of Romanian origin has a catalog of fiber optic tariffs that is very attractive for anyone who wants to enjoy maximum speed without spending a lot of money.
smart fiber, This is exactly what is available in those regions where the operator has its own fiber-optic network, from 15 euros for 500 MB and up to 25 euros per month if a contract is concluded for up to 10 GB symmetrically. However, it appears that some users will report significant drop in speed in the last hours of the day, as our colleagues from RedesZone explain, what could be the reason?
Possible saturation
As we already expected, Digi is one of the most popular operators currently in our country. Its attractive prices are more than enough reason for many users to choose hire their services, especially if you have direct carrier coverage. However, this can be a problem from a user experience perspective. during peak hours.
As RedesZone explains, Digi uses GPON and XGS-PON technology over optical fiber up to 10 Gbit/s, this is exactly what the tests were carried out with. Thus, the OLT port is used by dozens of clients. And this is the reason why during peak hours, when receiving a large number of requests, our connection may begin to experience certain slowdowns compared to the speed it offers us at other times of the day. But what speed tests?
Effect of Descent Speed
To confirm the hypothesis, RedesZone conducted several speed tests, which allowed monitor performance our network connection at different times of the day. Although the connection maintains very linear performance for most of the day, it classic variations which is typical for any operator, this does not happen between 22:00 and 23:00. This is probably when most people are connected to the Internet, either browsing the Internet or consuming content via streaming. Additionally, when the test is extended to the last seven days, a decrease in speed was also found in other time intervals, e.g. 17.00 and 19.00 or at certain points in the morning.
However, our colleagues always note that the decrease occurs only in descent speed, not on the way up. Quite a common diagnosis when we refer to the possible saturation of the network that the connection offers us.
Although there has been no recent news from the operator about a possible impact on its services, it is likely that these are minor saturations caused by an increase in the number of customers, and that these may occur locally and punctually. We’ll continue to monitor the RedesZone team’s testing to see if Digi continues to experience similar issues in the coming weeks.
