Argentina: global childhood cancer cure rate is 60%

Childhood cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death among boys and girls aged five to 15 years in Argentina. However, the Argentine Society of Pediatrics (SAP) estimates that the country’s global cure rate is around 60%, so experts emphasize that early diagnosis “makes a difference in prognosis.”

SAP estimates there will be 1,300 to 1,400 new cases of childhood cancer per year in the country in 2023, making it the leading cause of disease-related death among boys and girls aged five to 15, preceded by accidents.

In this sense, it is estimated that there are at least 450 deaths per year from cancer in children under 15 years of age, but the estimated global cure rate in Argentina is around 60%.

“Early detection of cancer, timely diagnosis and proper treatment of the disease can improve a child’s prognosis and increase the chances of a cure. Early diagnosis can change the prognosis and eliminate long-term side effects, and the role of the pediatrician is crucial in identifying the pathology,” concluded Thomas Piqueras, CEO of the Center for Hospital Services.
