Why Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s New Thriller is So Exciting
News of the project first surfaced in January, when Coogler completed his script and was ready to show it to studios (though not streamers). Strong words like “noisy project” or “trade war” were often heard in media reports, perhaps by their publicists, perhaps not.
But there was always an interesting veil around the film. First, representatives from interested studios were forced to go to the offices of WME (Coogler’s agency) to read the script, similar to how it works with the new Marvel or star Wars movie. But Coogler also wanted his part of the deal and asked for some specific terms when signing the deal – the most interesting being that he wanted the rights to revert to him and/or his estate after 25 years.

This was a deal breaker for some studios, but Warner Bros. eventually agreed to it, perhaps because studio executives Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy really believed in the project, perhaps because they wanted to attract as many A-list stars as possible. that they could make their boss, the CEO of Warner Bros., happy. Discovery by David Zaslav as he tries to force a sale of the company this year.
Most likely, both. The studio has given the film a major release date of March 7, 2025. That alone may not give much away, but like the first weekend of October, it’s a location WB typically favors for its big-event films. Released two years ago Batman that weekend and this year they opened Dune: Part Twoboth led to huge success. That doesn’t necessarily guarantee box office success, but it’s a sign of confidence in what Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan have in store.
Of course, the pair’s new film is very interesting in itself, but there are additional details that we can read between the lines that may excite us even more. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this project is the buzz, at least in the media, about how a completely original idea is being created, and how WB is taking it to the next level, treating it as a blockbuster similar to a Batman film .

Will this translate into box office revenue? There is some precedent to think so, even if Coogler hasn’t made a non-IP film since. Fruitvale Station. Jordan is a pretty big star right now, and Coogler’s name is also getting attention thanks to Marvel. It may not be a 1:1 comparison, but a director like Jordan Peele can also sell a movie just by putting his name on the poster, even if it’s not pre-branded.
The combination of vampires, white supremacists and musical elements could be the perfect cocktail the box office needs right now, especially after Barbiewhich also included musical elements and a fresh take on elements familiar to audiences.
Ryan Coogler and his wife Zinzi Coogler are producing the new film.
Filming is about to begin in New Orleans, so things are moving pretty quickly. It’s possible that once that happens, some photos from the set will leak online, although Coogler really wants to keep everything under wraps until they’re ready to show the film.
