Genre films are often ignored by Academy voters and nothing more than horror. Horror films have been a cornerstone of cinema since the format’s inception George Melies”Le Manoir du Diable” is often considered the first horror film. Since then, we’ve had hundreds of seminal horror movies, including “Nosferatu,” “Psycho,” “Rosemary’s Baby,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Halloween,” and “The Shining.” All of these have influenced not only the horror genre but the film industry at large in some way or the other. Yet, only six of our films have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars in the history of the Academy Awards. Let’s take a look at them.
The first horror film to be nominated for Best Picture was William Friedkinof “The Exorcist”, which follows max von sydowA priest is trying to free a 12-year-old girl from the entity that has taken possession of her. The film made a big splash at the 1974 Academy Awards, receiving a total of 10 nominations and winning Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay. William Peter Blatty, who adapted the book from his horror novel of the same name. The film was also nominated for Best Director, Best Actress for Friedkin. Ellen BurstynBest Supporting Actor for jason millerand for Best Supporting Actress Linda Blair, However, “The Sting” won the Best Picture award that year.
Voters Just Waited Two Years to Nominate the Next Horror Movie for Best Picture Steven Spielberg“Jaws” claimed four Oscar nominations at the 1976 Oscars. That film is based on a police chief (Roy Scheider), a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss), and a shark hunter (robert shaw) to find the great white shark that is attacking beach goers in a seaside town. The film also had a very successful performance at the Oscars, winning three out of four nominations. Those wins were for Best Sound, Best Editing, and Best Original Score. Its only nomination was for Best Picture, which went to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”.
The next big one was: “The Silence of the Lambs.” This movie is one of the best movies ever made jodie fosterClarice Starling, a junior FBI agent, is working with notorious cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter (anthony hopkins) to catch another deranged killer. Nominated for seven Oscars in total, “The Silence of the Lambs” made history on several fronts. It became the first horror film to win Best Picture and the third and most recent film to win the Big Five at the Oscars: Picture, Director (for jonathan demme), Actor (for Hopkins), Actress (for Foster), and a writing award (“Lambs” won Adapted Screenplay ted tally, Only the aforementioned “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1976) and “It Happened One Night” (1935) match this feat.
“The Sixth Sense” came next, which claimed six Oscar nominations in 2000. M. Night Shyamalanfollows bruce Willis As a child psychologist who works with a patient (haley joel osment) who says he can see dead people and talk to them. It was nominated for Best Picture, Director for Shyamalan, Supporting Actor for Osment, Supporting Actress Toni Collette, original screenplay, and editing. However, the film walked away empty-handed at the Oscars, as “American Beauty” won the Best Picture award. “The Sixth Sense” became the first original horror film nominated for Best Picture, however, the three horror films previously nominated for the top award were all adapted from novels.
Eleven years later in 2011, horror returns to the top tier darren aronofsky“Black Swan”, which depicts a ballet dancer (Natalie Portman) on the brink of stardom pushed to the limit by its artistic director (Vincent Castle) and its rivals (Mila Kunis, She slowly begins to lose her grip on reality as her life becomes a nightmare. “Black Swan” won Best Actress for Portman and was also nominated for four other Oscars, including Picture and Director for Aronofsky. “The King’s Speech” won the award for Best Picture that year.
The most recent horror film nominated for Best Picture was jordan peel“Get Out”, the story of an African-American man who goes to visit his white girlfriend’s family for the weekend and slowly realizes that there is something strange about one leg. Peele’s film completely changed the horror genre (thanks to Peele, social horror is now its own sub-genre) and was rewarded with four Oscar nominations in 2018: for Picture, for Peele, for Director, for Actor. Daniel Kaluuya, and the original screenplay for Peele. It won the script bid.
This is the last time a horror film was nominated for Best Picture, despite a flurry of excellent, acclaimed horror pictures including “The Witch,” “Hereditary,” “Midsommar,” and “The Lighthouse.” However, could a horror film be released this year? Well, as welcome as that might be… it doesn’t look that way. The only horror film to appear on our Oscar odds chart for Best Picture is “Beau Is Afraid,” which was released earlier this year on April 14.
He is the director of A24 Film, “Hereditary” and “Midsommar”. ari asterfollows Joaquin Phoenix As a crazy man named Beau who embarks on a surreal journey home to attend his mother’s funeral. The film received positive reviews from critics, but did not receive the overwhelming support that might have propelled it into awards consideration. Instead, it sits at 67% on Rotten Tomatoes. It currently rounds out our predicted 10 nominees for Best Picture: “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Poor Things,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Maestro,” “American Fiction,” “Past Lives,” “The Color Purple,” “Anatomy of a Fall.” It also doesn’t expect any other bids to be made again, which hurts your chances. If it had been earmarked for a writing bid or an acting nomination, it could have propelled it toward a cumulative Best Picture nomination. Alas, it doesn’t look like this will be Phoenix’s hottest film of the year — his historical epic “Napoleon” is due out soon.
So, it looks like there won’t be any horror submissions at the Oscars this year – not in the Best Picture category, anyway. But it’s something to look forward to at a future Academy Awards. robert eggersRemake of ”Nosferatu”.
