Wingegaard: “It’s a shame, but we have to be happy”
On the way out of Pinerolo, still on Italian soil, Jonas Wingegaard stressed that it was “a day to try to protect yourself,” and that is exactly what he tried to do: both in Galibier as well as on the subsequent descent on the way to Valloire. His idea was to minimize losses, since almost the entire Tour lay ahead. The champion of the last two races considered it normal that Pogacar felt “pressure” from feeling like the favourite: “It’s normal, in my case I didn’t have the perfect preparation (due to the accident in the Basque Country) and my performance is still unknown.”
Then, after the stage and in third place overall, 50 seconds behind his great rival, Jonas showed optimism. “It’s a shame to lose time, but to be honest, when we started the Tour, we already imagined that we would lose time on almost all of the first four stages. The fact that this only happened in one case is something we can be very happy about,” the message from Visma was analyzed. “We were already expecting to lose 3-0, so this feels like a small victory,” added Wingegaard. repeating a phrase with the word “victory” which he had already used in Bologna, after the second day, in front of the media
