Alexander Zverev has not reached as many ATP Masters 1000 semi-finals as he did in Rome. The statistics were compiled this Wednesday after the German defeated American Taylor Fritz with a score of 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2024.
The fifth number in the PIF ATP rankings now has four qualifications for the semi-finals in Rome, leaving behind his own records in Madrid (3), Miami (2), Cincinnati (2), Monte Carlo (2), Paris (2). and Shanghai (2). His love affair with Foro Italico is such that it was here that he made his debut in this round at the ATP Masters 1000 level, in the 2017 tournament, which he eventually won.
He is now two more wins away from his second title at this tournament, which would take him to No. 4 in the PIF ATP Rankings, a position currently held by Daniil Medvedev. This will be his best result since August 2022, when he was ranked second in the world rankings.
However, there are still steps you can climb. The next one is Alejandro Tabilo, with whom he has no rivals on tour.
Of course, he starts as the favorite. Based on experience and also based on current level. On Wednesday, for example, he played a superb game without being able to break serve and scored 20 winners, eight more than his opponent. He also made 11 unforced errors, six fewer than Fritz, against whom he now has a 5-3 record.
Even after falling in the third game of the match, which required medical attention and resulted in obvious injuries to some limbs, Zverev was unstoppable for an hour and 30 minutes of play.
He now faces his eleventh qualification for the ATP Masters 1000 Final, and his first since Madrid 2022, when he was drawn with Carlos Alcaraz. If he achieves this, he will prevent Tabilo from becoming the first Chilean in a Masters 1000 final since Fernando Gonzalez in Rome in 2007.
