Peugeot is one of the main manufacturers with the largest range of electric vehicles on the market. Among the latest new products, the Peugeot E-3008 stands out, which will also be covered by an eight-year warranty. On the occasion of this new product, EL ESPAÑOL participates in a meeting between its Global Director, Linda Jackson, and a number of renowned media outlets. This was our conversation…
Why was the E-3008 offered with an eight-year warranty?
Because we want the customer to be confident in switching to electricity. The battery already had a warranty of eight years or 160,000 kilometers. So, we extended the coverage to the entire car.
In this way, we strive to make the transition to electricity as attractive as possible for people. In addition, it also increases the residual value: a four-year-old car sold as used will have another four years of warranty, increasing its resale value.
Will Peugeot release a car cheaper than the Peugeot E-208?
No. Peugeot has no intention of making a smaller electric car. At Peugeot we still have the 208 as the start of the range. We have already discussed this a lot within the company. Many manufacturers are struggling to create a very small electric car. But we as a brand will not accept this decision.
Our solution will be to offer innovative financial offerings to make them as accessible as possible. For example, in France there is a special incentive from the French government called electric vehicle leasing, which allows you to drive an electric Peugeot 208 for 99 euros per month. And in other countries we are launching another program in which you pay for the kilometers traveled.
So this is our proposition: to offer affordable vehicles through financing offers, thanks to the great work we have previously done to improve our residual value.
In 2025 there will be competitors from the B segment with a prize of 25,000 euros, the Renault five, VW ID.2, Cupra Raval, Tesla… However, the Peugeot E-2008 starts from about 35,000 euros. How to compete with these cars?
I think we can compete with these machines. First of all, because we have already launched a B-segment electric car on the market. And yet, all these cars you mention in the question have not yet been released.
But in addition, we will continue to work to make our cars affordable. And we will do this through residual value and financing solutions.
Toyota recently announced that the share of electric vehicles will be 30%. And yet Peugeot claims that in 2030 they will sell 100% electric cars… These are two completely different visions. Do you think your vision will outperform the competition?
The first thing I want to say is that in all corners of the world, no matter what, you need to follow the rules that exist in each place. So when we talk about this strategy, we mean Europe, because outside of Europe it’s a different story. And in Europe, as you know, the European Commission and our elected representatives have voted for zero-emission vehicles as the solution, so the number of electric vehicles will inevitably increase.
So where we are will determine how fast the transition will be and how appropriate it will be for our customers. We have created attractive cars with great technology, but experience is also very important to us. Our experience gives you peace of mind. In addition, we also offer efficiency.
The market is now starting to grow… but we don’t know how far it will go. Despite this, we can say that we are leaders in B-segment electric vehicles and light commercial vehicles. And now we attack segment C.
However, who will decide what the electricity market actually looks like will be consumers. And we’re building models to help clients make that transition. For all these reasons, we will have to increase sales of electric vehicles to meet CO2 emissions targets. Therefore, all manufacturers must have the best cars to convince customers.
Peugeot became the first brand of the Stellantis group to launch a car on the STLA platform, in particular the mid-size STLA. Does this mean Peugeot will be the first to receive the group’s new technologies?
At Peugeot we are very pleased to introduce the new STLA mid-size platform. But we must remember that there are 14 brands in our group and we have four platforms: small, medium, large and frame. So, rather, the fact of working with one or another platform depends more on when the machines arrive and when they will have to be replaced, that is, on the life cycle of the product, there is no greater rule.
Of Peugeot’s total sales… what percentage are plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and what percentage are pure electric vehicles (BEVs)?
Plug-in hybrids account for 5% of total sales, and electric vehicles already account for 10% of sales. In Europe alone, sales of low-emission vehicles increase by up to 20%.
How are you going to deal with the Chinese Peugeot brands?
First of all, we need very attractive cars. In addition, they must be affordable, have a high redemption value (residual value), good power, and also be efficient.
But we also need to cut costs. And we are now concentrating on the latter, reducing the cost of vehicles. And this is being done, for example, by opening our own battery gigafactories to be able to produce batteries in Europe, just like we already do with our engines in Europe.
Another aspect is reducing logistics costs. And with all this, we are committed to reducing the prices of our electric vehicles by 40% by 2030. And we remember once again that we already know how to make electric vehicles and the proof is that we are leaders in the B electric vehicle segment.
When will Spain get the STLA Small platform to produce a replacement for the current 208 and 2008 models?
I will not comment on this issue. Must wait.
Will the Peugeot 508 have a coupe-sedan successor?
We will not comment on future models. We still have some secrets and things to consider. But we can say that we have the widest range of electric vehicles of any manufacturer in Europe. And alongside the Peugeot E-3008, which we’ve also announced will come with a warranty of up to eight years, we’ll also be revealing the E-5008 soon.
What is the situation with environmental materials?
In this sense, we should talk about two specific aspects. Firstly, the fact of using environmentally friendly materials does not mean any compromise in the quality and safety of the car. And then it’s also worth talking about what we know as green material, which is recycled material or bio-based material.
The latter helps reduce CO2 emissions. Therefore, it is also important because it helps us reduce our carbon emissions and become carbon neutral in 2038. And now we’re reporting that in 2030 we’ll have four new cars that contain at least 40% green materials. And earlier, in 2027, we will have to reach 35%.
Some tasks that require us to work very closely with the design and engineering teams. And then we look for partnerships with companies to recycle clients’ cars. In this sense, we have already agreed to recycle metal and plastic and now we will do the same with batteries, because in the future batteries will have to include a certain percentage of recycled elements.
