The Indonesian Badminton Association confirmed the news: “Sad news from the world of badminton. Chinese athlete Zhang Zhijie died at the age of 17 on Sunday (30/06/2024). PP PBSI expressed condolences on the death of Zhang Zhijie while participating in the 2024 BNI Junior Badminton Tournament. May the remaining families find strength and patience. Amen,” he shared.

He passed out in the middle of the game.

Badminton Asia and the Indonesian Badminton Association shared a joint statement explaining the tragic outcome: “Chinese singles player Zhang Zhijie collapsed on the court during the night match and was taken to hospital where ‘he died at 11:20 pm local time.'”

“Zhi Jie was playing a game group stage against Japan when he lost consciousness and was treated by the tournament doctor and medical team. He was taken to the hospital in less than two minutes by an on-call ambulance,” they explain.

“Badminton Asia, PBSI and the Organising Committee are extremely saddened and express their deepest condolences to Zhang’s parents, his family and the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA). Badminton World lost a talented player“, they conclude.
