39-year-old man who attacked Danish PM taken into preventive custody, suffers from “mild cervical sprain”

Mette Frederiksen has cancelled her commitments for this Saturday and said she was “sad and shocked”.

The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette FredrikssonWho was attacked by a man on Friday CopenhagenHe has a “mild cervical sprain” and has cancelled his Saturday commitments, his Cabinet said in a statement.

After the attack, Frederiksen was taken to Rigshospitalet for a medical examination. According to his office, he suffered a “mild cervical sprain” due to the attack.

The prime minister, who has canceled his agenda for Saturday, has published a message on his Instagram account in which he assures that he is fine but is “shocked and saddened” by what happened. Now, he says, he needs “peace and quiet”.

The court in Frederiksberg (Denmark) has ordered a 39-year-old Polish citizen to be kept in preventive detention until June 20 for attacking Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in centre of Copenhagen yesterday.

A man accused of assault against a public official denied the charges during a hearing held with restrictions, and was clearly impaired by alcohol and other drugs when he was arrested, according to a police report released a minute later striking Frederiksen’s arm with his fist and pushing him,

Frederiksen was treated at Copenhagen’s Kingdom Hospital last night and was diagnosed with a “mild concussion”, the prime minister’s office said.

During questioning last night, the man, who has been living in Denmark for a few months, admitted recognising Frederiksen and said he did not remember much about what happened, but denied killing him.

“At the moment our main hypothesis is not that this was a politically motivated act. We have no further comment on the case,” the police said on its account on the social network X.

In his statement today before the judge, the man who needed the interpreter showed his sympathy for Frederiksen and assured that she was a “very good” prime minister.

The attack comes two days before Danes vote in EU elections.

Several EU leaders condemned the incident, which occurred just three weeks after Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico was seriously injured in an assassination attempt.

“The attack against the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, is an intolerable act of violence that represents an attack at the heart of democratic values,” the Italian Prime Minister declared in X. Giorgia Meloni,

Ursula von der LeyenThe President of the European Commission wrote on the same social network: “I am deeply shocked by the news of your attack tonight. I condemn this despicable act which goes against everything we believe in and fight for in Europe. I wish you strength and courage, which I know you have in abundance.”
