A journalist from the Italian newspaper ‘La Stampa’ was attacked by far-right extremists who beat him up while he tried to document a meeting in front of a place frequented by far-right supporters in Turin (north), reports the newspaper this Sunday.
The incident, which the police are already investigating, took place this Saturday night, when some militants from the neo-fascist group Casa Pound were holding a party outside the premises, they approached the journalist Andrea Joli, who was recording with her mobile phone, and they asked her: “Are you one of us?”
The attackers then ordered him to hand over his cell phone, threatened him and attacked him, even to the point that when he left he fell to the ground and they kicked him, which forced the journalist to seek medical treatment in a hospital, according to the same sources.
Agents from the General Investigations and Special Operations Division (DIGOS) are investigating what happened, and analyzing images to try to identify the perpetrators of the attack.
Turin Mayor Stefano Lo Russo expressed his solidarity with the journalist because “freedom of the press is a fundamental pillar of democracy and any attack on those exercising their right to inform is an attack on democratic values themselves.”
“Such episodes of horrific violence and aggression, whose responsibilities I hope will be determined as soon as possible, should have no place in our city. They cannot be tolerated at all and must be strongly condemned by all political forces,” he added.
