A new group of migrants sent to Albania have returned to Italy

Rome (EFE).- Seven migrants sent by the Italian government to detention and repatriation centers in Albania returned to Italy tonight and are now in Brindisi, after a new blow by the Rome court, which suspended its detention and sent The case is before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).

The Italian coast guard ship Visalli, which was carrying seven migrants held in the center of Gajdar (Albania) since last Friday, arrived at the port of Brindisi around midnight.

According to media reports, the migrants from Bangladesh and Egypt were transferred by minibus to a center for asylum seekers, where they would be able to follow the normal procedure to have their applications examined.

New blow to Meloni’s immigration policy

In this way, the detention centers that the far-right Italian executive Giorgia Meloni opened in Albania as part of its migration externalization agreement with Tirana will once again be empty.

This is the second time an Italian judge has blocked the deal with Albania.

The facilities were inaugurated on 14 October with the arrival of the first group of 16 Bangladeshi and Egyptian migrants intercepted in the Mediterranean Sea, although Meloni’s plans were immediately scaled back.

Four of them, being minors or “vulnerable” – had to be returned to Italy on arrival – after a two-day trip to Albania – and, two days later, the rest suffered the same fate following a decision by the Roman Court.

Based on a recent opinion of the CJEU, the judges pointed out that for a country to be “safe” it must be safe throughout its territory and that neither Egypt nor Bangladesh are safe, which blocked the group’s possible repatriation.

Salvini accused the courts of issuing political decisions

The Meloni government responded by shielding the list of safe countries by decree, retaining both Egypt and Bangladesh, in an effort to facilitate the expulsion of many immigrants from those countries arriving via the Mediterranean Sea.

On this occasion, the Court of Rome decided to suspend the status of migrants and refer the cases to the European Court of Justice.

The Court, in one of the migration-related acts of Bangladesh, reads, “Considers that the right to an effective remedy granted to the asylum seeker is an expression of the more general right to effective judicial protection guaranteed by Art. 1 of the Fundamental Rights of the European Union 47 of the Charter of.”

“This is another political punishment against Italians and their security. The government and parliament have the right to react to protect citizens, and they will do so,” attacked Matteo Salvini, the League’s leader and vice president.

For his part, Maurizio Gaspari, spokesman for the Forza Italia senators, defined the magistrates as “subversive”, announcing that he had also requested the inspection of Judge Silvia Albano, member of the immigration section of the Rome court.
