Expand your knowledge about pregnancy and the postpartum period to live these processes with greater calm and safety. These are the goals pursued by the classes on protection of maternal health – an initiative that originated in Vitas Hospital Las Palmas for over ten years, which is intended for pregnant women from 30 to 33 weeks of pregnancy and their accompanying persons. “We want both women and the people they decide to accompany during this stage to be well informed. It is very important that they have more confidence in the process and know why professional intervention is sometimes necessary,” explains Silvia del Sar, a midwife at the aforementioned centre in the capital of Gran Canaria and responsible for such training.
As the specialist clarifies, The classes consist of six lessons, divided into two blocks.which have been updated over time. One is devoted to childbirth, and the other is devoted to the postpartum period and the care that newborns require. The first focuses on physiological childbirth – the so-called “normal” childbirth – as well as other types of childbirth that can occur.
“It’s really important that families are prepared and know that all forms are valid,” says Del Sar. Added to that is a section on pain management. And there are medications, techniques, and tools that can help manage the sensations of labor and reduce pain, so it’s important to know them.
The second block also consists of three topics: newborns, breastfeeding and the postpartum period.“We describe babies from head to toe so that families can spot any abnormality and seek help. In addition, we emphasize the benefits of breastfeeding and refer to other feeding methods, since there are women who do not want to breastfeed or cannot for some reason,” the expert adds.
Similarly, the postnatal ward focuses on the body’s recovery phase, emotional changes, warning signs, and procedures that need to be carried out after the birth of the baby. Each lesson lasts two hours and the training includes theoretical and practical phases..
According to the midwife, These instructions provide women with safety and confidence.“This initiative allows pregnant women to learn about all the options available to them, how we work, the staff who will be caring for them, and how their bodies work. This gives them more decision-making power and participation, making them more integrated into the process,” he says.
Among the main concerns expressed, the specialist highlights doubts related to the moment when you need to call emergency services and with people who can accompany them to the delivery room. “We must remember that this event has many consequences for personal and family life. So it is quite normal to have many questions and want to be prepared when the time comes.
As for the predominant profile of women attending these classes, it should be said that Most of them are women who are pregnant for the first time.. Now there are others who have already had a child and who decide to repeat it to refresh their knowledge. “Depending on the time that has passed, there are things that change, and there are things that are forgotten. Moreover, there are situations that do not arise when the first child is born, but happen when the second is born,” the doctor warns.
Women wishing to attend sessions at this hospital can register when logging in. Outpatient cliniclocated on Calle León y Castillo, or at the Vitas-Clínica Barén clinic on Calle Federico de León, where most of the center’s gynecological consultations are located. “So far, the balance between these activities is very positive. On the one hand, it allows me to know the profile of the women we help before seeing them in the delivery room. On the other hand, I can answer many questions, and this task is very enriching for me,” says Silvia del Sar.
